One of the first flicks I ever made with my pal Tim Broderick.

]]>This was my first attempt at claymation. I spent a weekend making this little piece using my family’s old shoulder-mount VHS camcorder. The first problem I faced was realizing there was no way to actually shoot one frame at a time. Also, I found it took about 2 seconds (after hitting record) for the camera to actually start capturing. So I would move my little figures a bit, hop behind the camera, hit the record button, count “two-Mississippi’s” then quickly turn it off… then move the model some more and repeat my little ritual. It’s not stellar but certainly didn’t turn out bad for an eleven year old.
This experiment really peeked my interest in animation at the time and definitely set me in a specific direction for the future.

]]>I didn’t want to sing in front of everyone for my junior high music class final, so I asked if I could make a music video instead. They said yes. I chose REM’s “Stand” and attempted my first music video. I didn’t have any editing equipment or know-how in that department so this was a ton of head scratching at that juncture. I recruited my Mum for camera and my Aunt Mary helped me figure a way to tie our VCRs together with her tape player. I didn’t think I’d meet deadline but managed the night before. I didn’t have to perform in front of everyone and my teacher loved it. Awesome!

]]>My sister Gwen was always a natural in front of the camera. She grew up watching me goof around with camcorders and was never shy when I turned it towards her. This is the result of a “baby sitting” session I had with her back in the day.

]]>I asked my 8th grade English teacher if I could make a movie in place of the required book report we had at that time. She agreed. Not everything worked out as I’d hoped. Audio was tricky… and my close-ups of handwritten text didn’t show as I’d hoped. Still, not bad for a 13 year old version of myself.
